I recently got an AmStaff puppy. He is now about 11 weeks old. One of his ears now seems a little more perky than the other. Is it normal for them to perk up a little bit as they grow?

It is very common for ears to change many times as a puppy. I have known dogs who had perfect ears until they were a year old, then they went bezerk and had to be cropped late. But you see a lot more with changing ears that end up just fine. Natural ears in the US are always a crap shoot, as we have not (for the most part) been breeding for good ears until just recently.

You can always tape or glue if you are concerned. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. As I recall, both of his parents had nice looking natural ears.
Now, arent there supposed to be two different types of ears? Something like half rose prick and something else. I don't know what the terminology is or what those two types might look like.
I'm not really worried. When I first got him both ears hung down completely. Like a hound or something. Now one is a little more erect at the base and the tip still flops over like a lot of amstaffs I have seem in photos. The other ear is still a little more floppy. I'm sure they will end up fine.
I'm curious though, what do you mean when you say they can be taped or glued.
Thanks.

Some people use tape or glue to hold the desired position for a few weeks to help produce the ear they want to see. This can be a lot of work and can be difficult for a beginner. If you are happy with how things are going, I would just wait it out. As long as the dog no longer looks like a hound, you are in good shape! ;D

Taping or glueing the ears is a good idea. We have a 14 month Amstaff, and his ears lay really nice. When he was about 4-5 months his ears were a little floppy. His ears didn't always look even, sometimes one ear would lay nice and the other would flop forward. What our breeder suggested at the beggining was that we pet his head frequently by smoothing his ears towards the back of his head. I have to tell you that it worked. I think that a lot of Amstaffs and Pitbulls look great with cropped ears, but personally I prefer natural ears. Besides that, the dog does feel the pain the day after and untill the ears are healed. Anyway... I'm not an expert, but thats just what I think.
